Obituary

DOLORES “DORIE” KESSLER LEDERER, age 86, passed away on October 14, 2020 from complications due to type 1 diabetes. Dorie was the epitome of a caretaker to herself and others, always giving and never expecting a thank you or anything in return. She lived with type 1 diabetes for over 55 years, taking the best care of herself to combat a terrible disease. Dorie worked full-time as a registered nurse until she became a full-time mother. Later she worked together with her husband, Dr. Herbert A. Lederer, D.V.M., at Berwyn Veterinary Associates, their business where they served their community with a passion for helping others and their pets.

When Dorie wasn’t helping others, you could find her in one of her many beautiful gardens. She was an avid gardener at her own homes and implemented organic farming long before it was popular. Dorie was a Master Landscape Design Consultant and a Master Gardener. She also served as an Illinois State Landscape Design School Chairperson, sharing her passions by teaching others about gardening. Dorie was a member of the Garden Club of Illinois, the Riverside Garden Club, and the South Barrington Garden Club.

Dorie’s creativity did not end with her love of all things botanical. She was an amazing cook, host, and entertainer for family and friends, making everyone feel at home and cared for. She also shared a love of antique cars with her husband, traveling many miles together around the country on old car tours. They developed long lasting friendships along the many routes of their antique car adventures.

A remarkable, classy woman and role model, she leaves her legacy as a caring mentor and matriarch of the family. Self-motivated and strong, she conquered new tasks and problems that most wouldn’t dare to attempt.

Dorie leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Herbert A. Lederer, her children: Robert (Jacqueline) Lederer, James (Jacqueline) Lederer, and Ann Field (Rick McCarthy); grandchildren: Paul and Alissa Lederer; Madeline, Emma, and Haley Lederer; Ella, Olivia, and Charles Field; siblings: Kathryn Kessler, John Kessler, and Martha (William) Gilmer. Dorie was like a mother to Martha Gilmer and held a grandmother role for the Gilmer children: David (Stacy), Matthew, and Jonathan.

There will be no immediate memorial service or funeral. Donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, PO BOX 37920, Boone IA 50037-0920 in her memory.
